Craft Edge

I've been trying to follow Susan's and Dan's tutorials on Inkscape, but have hit a problem. The "fill" doesn't seem to work. It looks like Dan selects an object, then just chooses a color from the color blocks at the bottom and the object just magically fills. Mine doesn't.
Can anybody figure it out? If I did this correctly, there should be a screen shot. Thanks.

You need to choose view "normal". You wont be able to see the color fill if you are in view "outline". Hope this helps
