I am trying to cut text I have put inside a rectangle and would like to have the text attached to the rectangle so it is attached to the sheet. I have tried welding but doesn't seem to work.

Use path/difference if you are using inkscape..

You are running into the "aperture problem." You need to create a frame first by putting one rectangle on top of another, selecting them both and then doing path>exclude. Now you can weld your word inside of that and it will work. If you are doing a card you may want to make the outer rectangle the card size and the inner rectangle the window size to start with.

Here a link to the recent video tutorials put out by craft edge for SCAL, They are very well done and explain how to do things in very simple terms. I have found them very helpful. The path menu video I will probably watch a few more times.
