US Map and cut out states project
US Map and cut out states project
I am working on a fund raiser at the school. We would like to put a HUGE outline of the US up on the wall. As we get pledges in from other states, I'd like to put that state on the map. I guess I would have to print out a giant map with the lines on it first and put that on the wall as my "canvas". Then I would need to cut out the states to size on the map. I would cut them all out in different colors. does anyone have any ideas, suggestions, or files to share?
Re: US Map and cut out states project
A very creative project.
I think your biggest problem is going to be to size the states to fit properly within the large map outline. Since you can at best cut a 11x23 outline of the US which may not be as large as you want. If you can work with that then try this graphic. It may work best if you cut out the "states" keeping the proportions of each when you enlarge, they assemble them on your larges sheet of paper and draw the outline around them.
I'm sure someone will come up with a better idea, but this is a start I hope

There is a cut for all the states in USA portion of SCAL2 basic shape library
Re: US Map and cut out states project
GREAT G,
I knew they were there but until you suggested it I hadn't played with them. I was at first concerned that they would not be to scale for each other but they are. If you can figure out how to enlarge them and keep the relative proportions one to another it should be easy, she says who hasn't tried it.
I did start it and by watching the overall map I was able to fit them together. I enlarged a group all together and then started adding new states and between drag to enlarge I was able to fit them together. Of course I started on the west so no sure when you will run out of room or memory but being creative you can work with layers to cut some and then move on deleting as you move east, saving along the way in sections I think.
Let us know how it works out.

Re: US Map and cut out states project
It would take someone smarter than me to figure that out about enlarge of all the basic shapes proportionally.
Your map is good for a trace and the svg is on the next page. I deleted the .scut files as the .svg will be easier to work with and sweetness found you an .svg also.
Select the whole thing, and ungroup and break apart, select all again, and adjust the height to say 40 inches, and then select state by state copy pasting to a new page and cut each one and they should fit together with the space around each one as you see in the file.
Good luck with the download issue...not a clue what is up with that.

Re: US Map and cut out states project
these are great ideas and suggestions. thanks for the fast replies. I did play with the map symbols is SCAL2, I cut out ok and tx, made them 10" and kept them to proportion (just made the width 10" and the length adjusted itself). when i cut them out like that, they would not "butt" up to each other and "fit".....i guess I could keep playing....
however, here is my OTHER issue....not sure I am doing this right but when I click on an attachement to download a file someone is sharing, it downloads and it either will not open or opens as a web page...I am using a MAC....is there a different way to download, am I doing it right?

Re: US Map and cut out states project
Well...I would take the lazy way out and print the map on a transparency and use an overhead projector to put it on the wall. Or cover the wall with white marlite or a heavy white paper roll that could cover a large area, guess it may depend on how permanent it will be...I made a large US map on 1/2" MDO for a school in the early 90's and that was how I transferred the image...of course, I painted the states in a variety of pastel colors and then used vinyl for the lettering. It was a permanent addition to the school, a gift from a retiring teacher. I'm thinking it was either 5'x8' or 6'x8'. This may not be a practical solution for you...but my two cents worth!

Re: US Map and cut out states project
Hi, most the the .svg files I download on my Mac go into my download folder. They have an extension of ..svg.xml. If you delete the .xml you get a message that says use .svg? Click yes and then you can open it is Inkscapre or import it into SCAL.amyyvonne wrote:these are great ideas and suggestions. thanks for the fast replies. Re: US Map and cut out states project
When you get this download of files problem figured out(above) and I hope someone has a solution for it...I posted what to do with my files to enlarge for each state in my post above. However, the overhead projector idea is a GREAT one also.amyyvonne wrote:these are great ideas and suggestions. thanks for the fast replies.
