Where is the tut on filling fonts with patterns- HELP!!!

I recently printed off the tut for this, but I must be missing a step, and now after doing a search, I still can't find the tut on the forum. Can someone direct me to it??? Wanting the tut on filling a font with different patterns.

These are Heathers Instructions for Inkscape. I'm not sure if this works for Ink .47.

You make your background pattern and your letter. There are some dingbats that would work for the pattern.
Convert everything to Path
If you used more than one dingbat for the pattern, use Path/Union
Place the letter where you want it cut from the pattern
If you want a solid outline, duplicate the letter (control D when the original letter is selected)
Select the pattern and one letter
Path/Intersection.
Select the remaining letter
Set the stroke to a width that you like
Path/Stroke to path
Select the patterned letter and the outlined letter
Path/Union

OK, these are same instructions that I printed off, but I am lost. I am using Amphion Outline font, and I have a zebra background that I traced, but then it gets kind of wierd after I import my BG, and get my font on the virtual mat. I don't know exactly what Heather means when she says

I am only using one letter at a time, right? I assume so.


Place the letter where you want it cut from the pattern

OK, so I move my letter over the pattern piece where I want it to fuse, so to speak.

If you want a solid outline, duplicate the letter (control D when the original letter is selected)

I want a solid outline on my letter, so I duplicate the letter to stack directly over the other letter, correct? OK, done that.

Select the pattern and one letter

So I choose the letter, and holding down "shift, choose the pattern to select both, I am also assuming.

Path/Intersection.

That's an easy step.

Select the remaining letter

Am I to assume now that I should not be stacking both letters on top of each other? And is this one the one she is now talking about, the duplicated letter? Is it supposed to be on the side somewhere for easy selection?

Set the stroke to a width that you like

I have no idea what this is, I must have been blonde in another life.
Path/Stroke to path

Again, easy.

Select the patterned letter and the outlined letter

Am I now choosing the letter over the pattern that I intersected, then holding down the "shift" again, choosing the letter that the "stroke width" was changed to?

Path/Union

And again, easy.

I guess I am just confused at all these big words, LOL. I know I am probably just overlooking something, but I have not really experimented with the different things Ink can do, basically I have just been tracing bitmaps and tweaking nodes.

If you could explain a little better to me about these instructions, I would so very much appreciate it.

The steps didn't work because you are using an outline font, and the pattern and the letter only intersect in the outline. You can use an outline font, but it will be more work. You would need to select the letter and the pattern and use Path/Division. Then you would need to select and delete all of the pattern pieces that are outside the letter (or inside in the case of A, B, etc). Finally, select what is left and Path/Union.

This would be if rather than using a zebra pattern you wanted flowers or something and used a dingbat to create it.

You could also break apart the letters, and use the inside pieces for the Path/intersection.

A good font for filling is Aachen bold. You could use this font and not have to do the extra steps.

Thanks Todd, I'll try this font too. Tell me if you can, am I able to put the entire name or word onto the pattern and change all at once, or do I have to do one letter at a time?
