Not sure if this is a SCAL issue or Inkscape

First, I draw in AutoCad. I've had a terrible time converting my files to svg's but have finally got it. I have to do several things but have been able to cut my files with SCAL. My problem is that when I import my svg into SCAL and cut, it cuts twice with the second cut slightly off. I do not have it set to muli-cut. What I did to fix this is break apart the item and delete one of them. It cuts perfectly that way and I save it as an .scut. The problem is that my original svg file is not right and I don't know how to fix it. I need to be able to import my .svg and it cut properly without having to break it apart and delete one.

Here are the steps I go through to save as an svg.

Save autocad drawing as a .wmf and import it into Inkscape.

Once the file is in inkscape I do the following:

Ungroup
Clip release
Stroke to Path
Combine
Union

Then I save as an .svg

I have tried many other ways and this is the only way I can get .svg's from my autocad drawings to actually show up properly in SCAL and work.

Anybody see anything that would be causing my svg to have 2 layers? I have SCAL 2 and Inkscape .47 by the way.

If you are using Inkscape 0.47 the important step is Path/Union. Do not use Stroke to path unless you want to change a line into a closed shape. That is why you are getting a double line in your files. If you need more help, post one of your wmf files and someone can help you with the steps. HTH

I would love for someone to take a look at my .wmf file but can't upload it--it says wmf is not allowed.

When I do path/union funky things happen so that's why I did stroke to path.

If anyone is willing to take a look at my .wmf and give it a try I can e-mail you the file. Thanks!

You can either zip it (on my computer I find the files, right click, select send to/compressed folder) or open in Inkscape and save as svg.

I agree with Heather, you don't want to do stroke to path. Change the extension of your .wmf file to .jpg, or try zipping it up and post it.

The reason why you are having problems is because your vectors are lines instead of closed shapes (and why Path/Stroke to path worked for you). Is there a good way for you to connect them in AutoCad? There is a way to do it in Ink, but it can be a little tedious if there are too many line segments.

I can convert to polylines in autocad but it doesn't work on ellipses/splines...any thoughts on that? How can I do it in Inkscape? Thanks!

Edited to add**Ok, I converted to polylines in autocad and still when I do path/union in inkscape my drawing goes crazy. I'm willing to try the more tedious inkscape version to see if it will work.

What are people drawing their files in? Inkscape? Illustrator? I can learn how to draw in another program if it eliminates all these issues I'm having.

First select all of the line segments for one shape and Path/Combine (control K). Then select the node editor and click on the combined segments to show the nodes. Use one of these node buttons to connect two end nodes.

This one connects two end nodes by replacing them with one node.

This one connects two end nodes with a new line segment.

You will need to connect all of the end nodes to create closed shapes for cutting.

I haven't been able to open the .wmf because I don't have uniconverter installed, but would the paint bucket work for these files?
