Make the cut

Post by annell »

Has anyone tried the new Make The Cut program? Seems Scal is getting some competition.

There two or three topics already posted about "Make the Cut". Have you read about the new updates for SCAL 2? Very exciting.

Is it appropriate to be discussing a competitor's software on SCAL's own blog? Tacky, IMO.

I should have done a search before posting. In response to Cadchick, we discuss other products on the board, nothing Tacky about that. We are however all entitled to our own opinion. :)

I agree with Annel! We got excited about the features on Make the Cut and Craft Edge responded with new upgrades. Nothing wrong with some healthy competition. I would never switch to the other product anyway. I love SCAL

I agree. I would never have known about SCAL if it wasn't for the Cricut MB. Did my research on both (DS and SCAL) and determined SCAL was right for me. I haven't checked out MTC because I love the SCAL program. I won't switch, I have what I want and need.

My MTC Review

I've been playing around with the MTC trial-- hoping it would do what SCAL2 didn't but, ugh, even with their newest update, I'm left disappointed.
People on their messageboard are praising the program but I don't understand what they can do now that SCAL2/inkscape can't do better?? Maybe it's just the layering of very basic images-- but it seems the only things I want to cut are too complicated for a simple trace anyway
I was hoping some of the weird issues that happens with the shadows on SCAL would be resolved but that program has it's own shadow glitches too. And there is no option to edit nodes-- so you've gotta use inkscape/illustrator for that anyway :( -- Honestly, I think if you can handle inkscape/illustrator, there is no need for MTC.

I suppose if you bought the Cricut to use the cartridges (which I did not-- I honestly don't even know how to use them-- still have 2 in their plastic from when they came with my purchase  ) then MTC just might be the next step for cutting similar images-- or if you've tried SCAL2/inkscape and it is too complicated, it might be a good fit for basic needs. But if you want to do more creating and editing of images to cut, then it leaves much to be desired-- I would definitely disagree with the idea that it is Inkscape and SCAL in one.

And for it to be a complimentary program to SCAL2, I think there are a lot of tedious little differences between the two that would drive one bonkers (you have to open a textbox to type in letters-- can't just point, click and type on the mat) and a few other differences that don't follow normal design program protocol (use of shift key, etc) that already makes me crazy.

Maybe the creator will keep enhancing and bettering the program, but for now, I say no go for me. I tried it and really wanted it to meet my cutting needs but I think it would be a loooong time until the program did what I'd spend extra $$ for it to do. Until then, time for me to download the newest SCAL2 update and play!! ;)

This is just my limited experience of the Make The Cut program, but I hope it helps!

by the way, I searched for "make the cut" and ALL 3 words were too common to come up on the search-- so it is tricky to find the threads on this topic ;)

Thanks, I did figure that out only after going through pages of recent threads

And for what it's worth, I don't think there should be a problem discussing other programs (even potentially competitive ones)-- It makes us a more informed community-- and I think that helps everyone here-- even Todd ;)

I've been trying to keep up on the MTC forum but it is quite one-sided, I really wanted to hear from the SCAL2 Pros on this one-- so I came here (just like I do for most all things Cricut) :D

No doubt the MTC fans are doin a better job with their viral marketing campaign. As I have spent hours on the various boards in the last couple of weeks I have been amazed at how little people know about SCAL. It seems SCAL2 in particular has been very poorly promoted and even within the "rogue" Cricut community, there are a lot of people who don't realize that SCAL 2 can autotrace, has layers, etc.
