Loading Paper with SCAL 2 and no cartridge

I received an Expression and SCAL2 for Christmas. I have it all set up ready to go with the latest firmware and usb drivers to operate it. The only problem I have is getting the paper to load. I don't have any cartridges yet so I don't have an overlay. Do I need a cartridge to get the machine to load the paper? I hit the button on the pad that looks like the load paper button in the instructions but nothing happens. The display says "Insert cartridge, use Gypsy, or Cricut Design Studio". So can I load paper through SCAL2 or do I need to go buy a cartridge? Thanks

Did a cartridge come with your Expression? You need a cartridge to make the Cricut work. Any cartridge will do or else go to one of Talanhart's posts and he tells you how to operate your Cricut without a cartridge. I'll see if I can find his post.

Thank you, I just went and bought a cartridge. It was much easier.
