How long does the firmware update take on your Cricut machine? Is it around 10 minutes or so? (I'm just trying to find SOME reason why the darn firmware isn't being changed.)

Just the same amount of time it took to update it the first time--6-7 minutes.

I will try what you suggested, but I can't until tomorrow. My PC laptop got infected with some major viral crap and I had to reformat and re-image it. Still working on that tonight. (This is why I love my Mac!)

I check with the Yahoo Group I belong to "SCALHints" and the firmware version 1.52 works with SCAL 1.016 works just fine on someone else's Cricut machine.

I'm befuddled as to why this isn't working with your machine. Do you have your Cricut machine hooked up directly to your computer's USB port (not through a hub)? Do you have a different USB cord, say from your printer, that you could borrow?

Although it sounds like it must work if you are able to run the Firmware update but then again, I wonder why the firmware doesn't change?

I was updating the firmware on my laptop (PC) and then installed SCAL on my desktop (Mac). On the laptop, I had the USB calbe connected directly to the laptop, but on the desktop, I had it connected through a hub. So that may be the problem. I will try again connecting directly to a USB port on the computer (that just means I have to unplug something else because I have run out of ports for things that will NOT work through a hub.)

Oh boy do I ever know what you are talking about. My desktop PC is a little older, about five or six years old, and it has four USB ports in the back and two in the front (and I think one of those doesn't work right). What a pain because EVERYTHING seems to need a USB port. My laptop PC is only about a year old and has four ports. I only use one USB port for the cordless mouse so that comes in handy for the Cricut machine. :)

I hope that works for you!! If so, at least you know why it wasn't communicating.

Yeah, why can't the people who make these computers realize that we need at least a dozen USB ports! I have 4 ports in my desktop (which is a very new and VERY expensive Mac Pro) and I still have to have 4 additional hubs to connect all my external hard drives, printers, and scanners. My Wacom tablet will not work through a hub, so it's taking one of the front, easily accessible ports, along with my CF card reader. The two back ports connect all the daisy-chained hubs. I have two ports in my keyboard, one for my mouse. But nothing else seems to work in those ports because they don't have enough power going to them. Ugh.
