Designing flourishes

How do you go about designing a flourish? I know I could copy one from somewhere else and trace it, or I could use one posted here, but how would I go about making my own? Do you use the bezier tool, the spirals, free draw?

The ones I have made I basically took from somewhere and traced either by hand or auto traced. Yes- all of the above...it's all open!
