The 5th icon down, on the left, choose the square.
Draw a square, then you can adjust using the "Change" line (right below the icons across the top) with the H and W, then Path, Object to path to have nodes.
(you can also round your corners using the Rx and Ry values)
If your square/rectangle is already in node form, then you can adjust the size by the W and H in the numbers boxes (below the icons)...
The X and Y values on this line is the placement on the screen where x=0 and y=0 is the bottom left corner.
The following is a little bit more advanced:
Also, if you shape is not regular, you can tweak the nodes to make it a square by the placement of the x and y values, and the "make selected segments a line" icon.
And you can also use the object/alignment and then at the bottom is the nodes selection to get your nodes in a straight line either vertically or horizontally.

I know this is a bit late, and hopefully you have found your answer by now, but in case any one is reading this thread for the first time and is looking for the answer... here goes.
Draw your square using the Square tool, then go to Object>Transform and when that window pops up, go to Rotate, type in 45 and select "deg" click apply. You now have a square on point.

I didn't know what a square on point was but since Angel's answer clarified it for me I'll tell you a quick way to do this:
Select the rectangle tool, press the control key (to contrain to square) and click and drag to draw a square.
press s to select the square (or click away and click back on it)
click the selected square to bring up the rotate handles
hold down the control key (to constrain rotation to 15 degree increments)
click one of the corner rotate handles until you reach 45 degrees and let go
Much quicker to do than to explain.
