SVG Font problems

Post by JEGREER »

So I am new to this and am demoing SCAL (trial version). I have tried several different methods to create text in Inkscape, save as an SVG, and then import to SCAL. The look fine in Inkscape, but the fonts are all screwed up in SCAL. For example, inside cuts of the letter "D" are moved out to the side. Is there a process that needs to be performed to make this work? Am I just doing something stupid?

Did you do a Path>Object to Path?

I tried it several ways. Tried just plain fonts, with the bad results. I even converted them to path, broke all of the letters apart, and re-unioned the internal pieces. Both with screwed up results. Here's a screen shot of the 2 programs. As you can see, inkscape looks fine. SCAL has the internal pieces of D, B, H, and A screwed up. I even tried saving as plain SVG in inscape:

I'm not sure what's wrong. I'm sure somebody else will answer your question soon. Just remember that the DEMO Version does make 3 watermark cuts in your paper until you buy the full version.

That looks like what happens with Inkscape 0.47. Open your file back up in Inkscape, select all of your artwork, then in this case use Path/Union.

For some reason with Ink47 you need to use any of the Path operations in the section with Path/Union and Path/Difference to get a vector that SCAL will cut correctly. HTH

I'll try that. Thanks.

With that said,it looks like I can still download an older version of Inkscape from SourceForge. Does it make sense to do that, and what version do you guys use?

Ink47 has some new tools that are nice. I think if you will find the new tools and features helpful you will want to stay with Ink47. If you have more than one computer available, you might install Ink46 on one and Ink47 on another. Some people install both on the same computer and have them in separate directorys. I have done this against my resident IT's recommendation without any problems (yet).

I had so many issues with version 47, I went back to version 46 and have had no problems importing my files into SCAL

I find I have to ungroup the letters in order for them to look normal in SCAL 2.. I type the word , hit object to path, and then ungroup..... I use only inkscape.47...

SVG Font problems - SOLUTION

Post by JEGREER »

I just wanted to report back with the final solution. Thanks everyone for the information.

It ended up being a combination of things; mostly an issue with Inscape47. I installed 46 on my other laptop and setup the file with the same conditions. FYI, the font is "Felix Tilting". I tried importing the SVG without converting the text to paths and ungrouping and that didn't work. But, once this was done, the SVG imported into SCAL just fine. Also, just to rule out the 2 different computers, I imported the 46 SVG on the other computer as well, and it worked there too.

Thanks again!
