Adding new carts without updating....

Post by Beanie »

I would only attempt this if you know your way around a computer at least a little bit.

1.Right click on cricut CDS shortcut on the desktop to find out where it is installed. Click the shortcut tab -It will be on the target line. When you find where it is located, you can either leave open or click cancle buton.

2. Go to my computer and find the folder rename it to 1Cricut Software

3. Go to the cricut website and install the new version of the software. install it as you have in the past without changing anything.

4.When the install is compleat it should install with the name Cricut Software

5. Rename it to 2Cricut Software

6. Now go to the folder of the 2Cricut Software open that folder and find the floder that says Cricut Design Studio then find the file that says Cricut Fonts.zip Do Not Open This File just highlight it and copy

7.now go back to the 1Cricut software and paste the file there. it will ask you if you want to replace the file say yes.

8. rename the 1Cricut Software back to normal Cricut Software and put do not use in front of the 2Cricut Software and you will now have all the new carts! :!:

So if we do this, it won't ask us to update the firmware when we go to cut...even after you've installed the update? This is sort of what I'm looking for. I thought it was working fine but lately I've been getting spurratic drag lines. I'd like to have the new carts but the old, original firmware from the CD version of the CDS.

Thanks for the tip! I followed the renaming instructions and both DS and SCAL are working great. Plus, I can see the new carts content in DS.

Sorry about bringing an old topic back but can the trial version be updated as in the post by Beanie to show new cartridges?

Thanks

Don't you still need the actual carts to cut out the designs?

That's what I'm wondering too Kelsie. Somehow it seems like hacking and a little on the shady-side. Maybe it's just to show what shapes, etc. are available with new carts.

Even with the trial version you can see all the carts and try out the images on the mat which makes it easier to decide if you want a new cart, especially with ones like Paper Dolls which has so many bits to it that you can only see how good it is when you bring the shapes down to the mat. I know that they have a few more carts which aren't on my version.

All these directions do is to update the cart content you can preview in Design Studio without blocking SCAL. You still can't cut out shapes from carts you don't own. Nothing shady going on to my knowledge. The cart contents, by the way, are in a password protected file. Even though you can download this file with the update for CDS, you can't access the "glyphs" if you don't know the password. They remain "locked" as to your ability to cut with them. You can only design with them like typical CDS.

Oh, ok, so the file just shows a picture of what's available on the carts. You still have to buy the carts to make the cut, right?
