New version of Inkscape

Post by susibi »

As mentioned before there is a new stable version of Inkscape - 0.46. However - although the download link on the page says 0.46 you will still be downloading the last stable version of 0.45.1.
Maybe they are still getting themselves straightened out!
This is a major update and when we can get to it includes the ability to read .pdf files which is a great advantage. Those users who were trying to find a way to convert their gsd files can now use a .pdf converter - there is a free one
here
For those of you who have the Craft ROBO - open your .gsd file in Robomaster then go to print settings and tick the print cut lines box, from the drop down menu choose your pdf program as your printer and click on the print icon.
This makes you a .pdf file which you should be able to open in Inkscape and convert to .svg to cut in SCAL.
I've not been able to try it yet with the new version of Inkscape but use this method with other graphic programs to convert my gsds so I know in theory it does work!!
Good on the Inkscape developers for giving us this very important new possibility.

I found the new download and I see why people asked which file to download. I downloaded the second file which was the .exe file.

Will post how it is working.

Have posted a screenshot. I has some new features (check the left side menu) and a new option on the Main menu (Whiteboard)...I know someone will figure that out and post.

Gotta go play. They changed the Zoom buttons around (ratio buttons are now first)...The Trace Bitmap screen does't automatically minimize anymore but there is a little (and I do mean little) arrow that is used to Iconify which moves it to the side of the screen. You have to actually close it by the X at the top of the Trace Bitmap screen.

You can import .pdf...comes up with an option screen so will have to look closer.

I created this napkin ring holder from a .pdf file. I had to export the pdf to a bitmap, open and trace.

Anyone running the new version of inkscape on a Mac PPC running Tiger? I JUST got inkscape .45.1 working, not sure if I'm wanting to do the upgrade ... but the idea of being able to bring in PDF files is very tempting!!

TIA

thanks for the link will go download now - when I tried to find the .exe version it wasn't there. I see they've updated the graphics - look very smart! Thank goodness they've cancelled a couple of lessons at school this pm so have a little more time to play :D :D
The fact there is now a flood fill tool is very handy - if you import a line drawing you can fill it before tracing - gets rid of the dreaded double lines!

OK I had a look at the link and downloaded but this is not the stable version of Inkscape - windows installer for version 0.46 still hasn't been posted ( I checked on their Forum). This version contains 0.45 plus the pretesting verison 3 and is very unstable so I'd say leave it for now and stick to 0.45.1 until the stable version of 0.46 is posted on the download page.

I have a daily snoop as the mixed version I downloaded is sooo unstable and has some bits missing :(
There are no help files yet, the pattern to path feature doesn't work and it freezes for no apparent reason - must be still bug hunting as there's still no sign of the Windows .exe
I hope they manage to get it out soon as this is the biggest upgrade since they added the .dxf file feature 2 years ago and has some really good features which will work well with SCAL- plus a lot of the fonts which previously wouldn't open in Inkscape now open so that'll please many people.

What is pattern to path and what is the function. The only problem I have had is changing fonts...don't know what that is about.
