A welding challenge
A welding challenge
I was on the Cricut board and someone made mention that you cannot weld inside a circle unless you have the JOTS cartridge. Well, I don't have it and don't plan on getting it either. It seems it can't be done using George like I thought. I've tried to do this in SCAL too without success. I think it has something to do with the burping issue. Anyway, I thought I would put the challenge out here. MAybe someone here can figure it out.

Re: A welding challenge
Welding inside an object has to be done in Inkscape and then cut in SCAL. However, it is sooooooo easy and you can make it so you can weld inside any object even though she has used a square. I have posted a link to the tutorial posted by member susbi...she has posted many tutorials and they are great.

Re: A welding challenge
Holy Cow... I have tried this like 10 times and I cant get it to work.
I tried circles.. and squares.. and tried welding different things inside.. nothing.
I made the box.. made a clone.. did the exclusion.. and the center box disappeared.. everything is fine up until then..
Then I import my image and stick it in the box.. select all.. path.. object to path.. path ... union.. NOTHING HAPPENS!
I even opened the .svg in SCAL to see if maybe it worked and I just did not know it.. but it really does not work.
Can someone tell me where I went wrong??

Re: A welding challenge
I had a problem with some my objects welding and found that sometimes when I trace objects I don't always Path>Union. Once I started doing that I didn't have a problem with the welding.
So you have your object, create a clone (CTRL +D), Offset the clone (Path>Offset), Select both objects (CTRL+A) and then do Path>Exclusion.
Import your object to weld (File>Import) and with that object selected, Path>Union. Add your shape to the other shape that you are welding it to, select all, and then Path>Union.
Work in the Outline view (View>Outline) if necessary.

Re: A welding challenge
My understanding of how the lady.. welded inside the circle using JOTS was done by taking the rocker from the horse and piecing, welding those pieces together the way the rectangle or square frames are done. Then the words can be welded inside the circle you create using pieces. It works the same way with SCAL. I have done it with a Paranthesis (6 or so). My circle wasn't completely round because I didn't take the time to tweek it. I would suppose if you created 2 circles this way , one a smaller size you could put items between. Just so those circles were created using pieces. Hope this makes sense. I don't have time right now to submit a picture as we are going out of town and I will be away from my coumputer..

Anointedhands,
Thank you so much for posting and I say you win the challenge! I'm so glad I don't have to buy a cartridge that I don't like for something simple like a welded circle.

Truth Be Told...you don't have to buy another cart to do anything...
Get to know Inkscape and SCAL together and you can weld any two object just like in the post above...you would never be able to do that in the other software. You can't even do it in SCAL but SCAL will allow you to import from software that can do it...

Glad my tut was of use! The most common problem is ' help I go to weld my shape and everything disappears'! This is because the select all Path>Object to path Path>exclusion step has not been done correctly. After duplicating and Path> Outset to make the frame, you must first click away from the shapes and then select all.In the tut you will see that if you select both the shapes there is a dashed line round each of the shapes indicating that they are two single shapes - when you do Path>Exclusion the inner dashed line should disappear and only then your frame will be considered as a single shape. At this point you can start welding your letter, number, shape, title etc
If you want to use this element not as a separate topper but cut as part of a card front select all then Path>break apart and delete the outside frame then select all again Path> combine. Then save this file as .svg( you can make a card similar to the cards with cut out designs to be found on the Cricut carts).

*open in inkscape
*click on circle: path:break apart
*click on smaller cricle: click delete
*click on butterfly: object: ungroup
*highlight circle & butterfly together: path: combine
it probably wasn't working for you because you had the butterfly "grouped"
anytime you group something in inkscape & try to combine it with other shapes or text, it will not work.
if you open the file I attached, make sure you change the display mode to outline or you won't see the image.
