Problems cutting imported graphics

I am very new to cutting vinyl and SCAL. If I create something entirely within SCAL, I am able to cut it correctly. It is when I import that I run into problems. If I import a graphic and try to cut it, any text I have added shows up in the cut screen and I am able to cut that but the graphic does not show and it will not cut if I try despite the fact it is not shown in the cut window. I have the same problem if I create an SVG file using Inkscape and try to import that. Usually nothing shows up, even the text. If I do a preview, it looks OK but when I go to the cut window, all or portions are not shown. I have been pounding my head against the wall for a week or more. I have looked at all kinds of tutorials and I am not getting where I want to be. What am I missing?
