telephone box

Post by jrichards »

I was attempting to make a box like this http://www.etsy.com/listing/65348367/pr ... te-svg-pdf?. I started with a phone clipart, added a box between two of them and then a half circle from the shapes library to do the separation. Then I attempted to draw a dotted line for the perforation along the box and tried to draw a line to separate the body from the handset. I just don't get draw. How do I get it to stop? How do I change it in size or length? I wanted a separate handset so it could be done in a contrasting paper. I never got to the cord but had the circle for the dial with the circles around it so I am not totally hopeless. If anyone wants to give this a try or give me some ideas about how to go about it I would appreciate it.

Thanks I will look at it a little later! I'd like to learn how to do a little bit more with the program.

Okay I watched the video and I get how to do the lines now, very nice. Next question, how do I "cut" something off of a shape? In this case I wanted to do a separate hand piece so I drew lines where I wanted it to be separated and then I was stumped again.

To get the line to stop just hit the enter button.

To resize the line (make it longer) click on your move tool (the arrow in the tools panel where the draw tool is) click on the line and just grab the handle at the bottom right with the double arrows and drag out.

To make a straight line place your first node and then hold down your shift key and place your next node, release the shift key when done.

To make curves is a bit hard in scal, I usually do this in make the cut because they allow you to go to your straight line in edit nodes selection and just merely put your cursor on the line and push it out which curves as you push it.

To cut something off of a shape, you need to pick a shape to cut it with, put that shape where you want it to cut it off (and please be patient with me, im not real good at this part) select both your shapes and go to path, front minus back (if that one didnt do what you wanted, hit the undo key and go back to path, back minus front. There is no knife tool in scal so you have to do it this way. I also do this in make the cut because they have a knife tool.

I hope this helps you some.

Very interesting. I am going to play with this and see if I can do something but don't hold your breath waiting for me to post a finished design. It may take me a while. Before the video I didn't even know where to start so thanks for the info!

Hello Jan

There are many different ways to achieve the results you may want - one way I have found helpful is to draw (however roughly) the end you are aiming for then work out how to get there.

In this case, it will be important to consider,

1 what if anything you want to put inside it.
2 How big it needs to be?
3 whether you need size tabs - in which case you may need to add them to my suggestion
4 how big can you actually cut - (if you are using a digital cutter )
5 or how big can you print - if you are going to cut it by hand

Sorry for every occasion I can think of lots of questions - just hope this will give you a good start
