If it's a design of their own say something they drew from scratch you would need their permission..

So how many of the images here or anywhere fall into that category? Most images google images or come from other websites and are imported into software and traced and made into an svg or scal format. Some people are just better at that than others. An image that is already copyrighted - such as Disney or Harley Davidson or Sport Logos - are still copyrighted even if they are traced and converted. I certainly don't want to start a war, but why post a file if you don't want someone to use it. I've shared lots of files that I created - I don't really care what you do with it. If I have purchased the file, I should be able to use theh file as I see fit.

Now, I am not talking about actually selling or re-selling the files - but that is not what was occurring on my page - even though that seems to be the general concensus here. I am talking about taking the file and creating a finished product - a tumbler, incorporating the design in wall oat or a decal or any number of items.

Again, I don't want to start a war - but clarification and what is expected should be discussed and we should be able to do that as adults without name calling or lies.

The biggest part is We are trying to protect or work. We took the time to learn, and don't get me wrong But good manners go a long way. I do design many files that you are not going to find by doing a google search and so do many of the others

But your best bet to keep yourself out of trouble is to go to one of the sites that offer graphics you can purchase for commercial use Here are a couple I know of

Every image made by the creator of that image is copyright as their image when they make it, without any further steps...it is theirs...they will have proof of date of creation on their computer or they would have the original artwork. That would be true for my work, your work or Disney's or such company. Anyone who uses another's artwork without permission for profit is stealing as there is no compensation to the original artist. It is probably even true that if a person uses the artwork for 'personal use' without permission that is stealing also as even for that one personal project there is no compensation to the original artist...so in a sense we have all been theives here. Some published works after a period of time become works of public domain and available for use by anyone...but we should all be looking for the permissions or asking for the permission. And for the most part if asked and recognized for the work, I am sure that nine out of ten times the artists would love the recognition...but to take other peoples work and use it to craft projects and post on sites and sell them without the original creators approval, or acknowlegement of their work is not right. Most of us here do this for fun, we make gifts for our family members, and we ask for each others help, and share with each other for this personal use purpose, and help each other to learn how to operate the software which is a good thing for the older ones of us here to keep our minds working. I am just oppose to people coming on acting as if they are just doing that but in reality are getting hours of free labor done for them and then turn around and post other people's work on their blogs and make items with it to sell without asking permission. That is why you will often see some of our members who work to help the others of us say, "Glad you learned to DIY". I figured that means, 'do it yourself '.

Gj1 -- you gave a pretty good explanation. I might add that work in general is considered to be in the "public domain" unless stated otherwise by the artist either in words or with a copyright symbol. So that is something we should all watch for, even when tracing and posting things like cartoon pages, or even some of the Google images.

If anything, the good thing that has come out of this is that we don't have someone with mega resources come along and shut the forum down for copyright violations.

Butterfly - I use all of those sites and the majority of my work is from sites where I purchase the file and can do with the file what I please - except, of course, sell the file - which I have never done.

Gj1 - Your post makes tons of sense and totally puts the whole issue in a different perspective. Thank you for sharing all of that. But, I have some files that were shared via email - such as Todd's Fight Like a Girl file. I had no idea whatsoever where it originated from. It was suggested to me for fundraising for my breast cancer walk that I do every year. I have obtain Todd's permission to continue to use the file for fundraising. I have never and will never pocket one thin dime from the sale of any product with that particular file on it.

In addition, so much of my work is done for fundraising and for the benefit of others that my husband is beginning to question who I am actually working for. LOL Thank you all for your time to answer the questions and to lend your perspective. I really do appreciate it.

"I have some files that were shared via email - I had no idea whatsoever where it originated from."
This is a quote from above...not sure why I can't make a partial quote...lol

I just wanted to make a note of this for those that maybe still are not clear. I also believe it is improper for those who take files from this forum or any place else to then pass them on to others. If the file is available somewhere we are suppose to get that file from it's offered location...not from another friend. So, in otherwords...if I obtain a file here, I can not then send that file to a friend, but rather should direct them to where I got it...if it is no longer available then it is not proper for me to give it to them. It is not 'my' file to give. That is just my understanding of it all. At the very least I always identify where I get the file from.

I have a folder with the persons name on it of where I get the file with a picture of the file, and then I put the picture into one big folder with the name of the picture having identification at the end of who's folder it is in. This way I have some way to know.
