ok how do you select JUST part of a image? and can you tell me in steps? I am new to the software and could not find much of a instruction manual.

How you select part of an image depends on what you have.
If there are just pieces that are placed on the virtual mat you can click on the pieces (hold down shift key to select additional pieces). You can also draw a selection box around the pieces, but it will select all pieces that are even partially inside the selection.
If the parts are grouped, you will need to use Object/Ungroup first.
If the parts are part of a single object use Object/Break apart first.
