break apart question

break apart question
In inkscape .47, when I click break apart on some files, the center of objects black out: middle of O's, etc. I am just trying to break apart some files to change things on them or move sections of them around. Is there something else I need to do? Or another method?
Windows XP, SCAL 2.102, Inkscape 0.47

When this happens to your letters or circles or the center of any others just click the 2 pieces of the o.. the center and outer part then click on path/combine...
