Complete beginner feeling a little lost!

Hi Everyone

I'm a bit of a novice, I downloaded SCAL today and have cut a few simple things but I want to create my own designs but don't have a clue where to start . I have come to the asumption I would need to create my images in a program like inkscape first before being able to cut them, could you please correct me if I'm talking rubbish!!!! Anyway I've downloaded inkscape but don't really know how to use it, so finally after all of my waffling, can anyone advise where I can find some tutorials on creating my own svg files in inkscape (in really simple terms) and then where I can find tutorials for using SCAL to it's full potential. I have seen a few tutorials in the tutorial section but they are too advanced for me, I don't understand most of them!!!

Not that I'm anywhere in the league of Susan BlueRobot, I've learned alot from her tutorials. I can't get my head around Inkscape yet so I worked at using PhotoShop Elements to do some of the pre-work before taking it into Inkscape.

Since you asked for something simple I have done what I think is a simple pictorial project, somewhat verified by the comments I've received. If you want to try it perhaps that would give you a jump so that when you get to Susan BR's you'll be ready for nodes and break apart. Of course you have to know basic Photoshop Elements so maybe that won't work for you.

I'd really appreciate the feedback as you sound like the exact person I wrote it for: a me just a few months ago.
