Hi everyone
Firstly...... hello Im new and am getting a cricut delivered soon!!!! Which im very excited about! And I want to get SCAL as well as using the carts. I know there are video tutorials and I will be making the most of those but I have a question about the different files. Ive seen people asking for people to change their file to svg (or from svg) but I can see on here that there are separate threads for scut files and svg files and while I have no idea what these are yet i am wondering can you only use one or the other? And if not then why do people need the files changing from svg if you can use them as svg's?
Oh and you are all extremely talented! I was worried about getting SCAL because Im not too sure how good I'll be at designing things but Ive had a bit of a look on here and everyone seems very friendly and encouraging and you have linked to some amazing designs that I'll definitely be using so thank you and hello
Welcome to the board!!! And welcome to the world of SCAL!!! You are going to love it, regardless of the sometime confusion and a tad bit of frustration...it is the challenge that keeps me with it, and the people here are all soooo helpful.
To answer your question...machines and softwares use different file extention names/types.
Cricut = .cut files or .gypsy files
Sure Cuts A Lot = .scut or .scut 2 depending on the version you use and they can easily be changed by just saving in the software program you have as the type of file you will generally be using.
Other cutting software programs have "their" own file extention types.
Inkscape, a free downloadable software, is also used often in designing images for many uses. It converts picture files to .svg file extention names, and those files can be used with all cutting software except for Cricut, which is not able to do that feature and must use only their cartridges for a price.
Since you will be purchasing SCAL's newest version...that will be .scut2 files...you will see when you get it that you can organize your images in a library as .scut2 files...you don't have to though, I guess...it is all preference...how you organize your files...that way or just as .svg's is up to you. I have some of both :)
There are so many free .svg...which can be converted to .scut or .scut2 files or just imported as .svgs, that it is amazing and such a savings on all the fun! Hope this helps you to understand a little better. Hope to see you here soon with some more questions and designs to share :)
I'm no expert here because I myself have not mastered Inkscape or any other program that can convert files to SVG's however the differnce between the two is just that. If you design something in scal and then save it in scal it will then be a scut file. An Svg file is created using another program and is then saved as an SVG into your scal library. You can use either type of file in scal. If you download say a free svg file it will remain an svg. If you were to use more than one svg at a time or add something to an svg, say from the shapes library or fonts library in scal and then wanted to save your work, then you would use "save as" (name it) then your work would be an scut file. The original svg should not change to an scut. I hope I didn't confuse you futher. This was how I explained it to my sister that had a hard time understanding the difference between the two and how to find and use them.
Really hope this helps
