If you can't break an object apart then you probably need to ungroup it. Select, then Object>Ungroup.

Yes, you ungroup most of the SVG files I've posted. They are SVG files, rather than bit-mapped, so I believe they do not need tracing or broken apart. Just click on the object, go to Objects, Ungroup. Then click on a piece of the object and move it out of the way until all are separated.
A couple of tips I have:
1. The colored in images have multiple translucent layers. When you move them away, you may not be able to see them anymore, so I suggest deleting them as soon as you move it off (so you remember where it is!). They won't add anything to your cut project as you can't duplicate the effect with paper very well.
2. Unless you really want to cut and glue fine pieces, you might consider skipping them and drawing them in.
