Dog Bone

Post by CyberAmazon54 »

I just made an important discovery. For every node in a vector-based drawing, the Cricut blade has to "hit" it. The fewer the nodes, the quicker the cut.

I uploaded this file before testing it, and it was downloaded once. So to whomever captured that first file and had to listen to your Cricut's blade tap-tap-tap cut this image, I'm sorry. This file has been improved.

Bone appétit!

You are absolutely correct. The Cricut is basically a plotter, cutting from point to point. I "Clean" up vectors all the time in Illustrator by simplifying the path. This saves a lot of time. I have a piece of artwork right now that takes forever to cut because I didn't clean it up. I have 150 cuts to make, so I definitely need to speed up the time it takes to cut.

Hi, Talanhart!
I have read many of your posts within this Forum and enjoy them every one. Clearly you are a professional. I am curious to know what you do, especially since it appears that you must incorporate your Cricut in the process. Is that a proper thing one user can ask of another in this venue, or is that too personal?

I use both CorelDraw and Illustrator in my 'trade' (which, generally speaking, is book publishing). I am more adept in the former than the latter, though lately I am getting more experience in Illustrator because it helps rescue EPS files from the mangling that Vista gives to EPS exports made from CorelDraw. (Seems you need to relearn everything on your system every time you upgrade some software. The killer years are those in which both the OS AND your predominant graphics ap improve!)

'Plotter' did come to my mind after I had posted that dog bone, and suddenly the light bulb came on! I have been so engrossed in the joy that is owning this amazing Cricut machine that it had not occurred to me to correlate its functionality in any way related to a standard computer system. How mundane!

I'm here today with an idea that involves creating a pieced paper embellishment to represent an angel wing created from multiple feathers cut with the Cricut. Wish me luck. LOL!

Here is the bone used on a scapbook page. All wording was also cut from my Cricut, utilizing a black ink cartridge to outline the bone and the word BONE. I love that black-outline-coloring-book-when-I-was-a-kid look.

It was noted by a fellow cropping gal pal that this bone looked like a wrench to her. (We're all very outspoken West Texas women around here! LOL!) SO... it does. If you take out just the inside cut, it looks like a sort of Fred Flintstoneish wrench.

Cartoons... coloring books... I'm Peter Panning this life! LOL!

Re: Dog Bone & Wing Feathers

Post by CyberAmazon54 »

This is what came out of my feathers-to-make-a-wing efforts. Cut individual feathers with Cricut (3 sizes, you can see the duplication in same-size feathers), used watercolor pencil and chalks to colorize & detail, stacked and packed... all white cardstock glued onto a solid background shape.
