Did I mess up?
We bought the Design Studio and are now considering Sure Cuts A Lot but in reading the links here, think SCAL wont work now that we have installed Design Studio and done the manditory firmware flash to the Expression. We were just about to purchase SCAL.

Is it true that since I have done this, SCAL will no longer work?

SCAL and DesignStudio will work perfectly well together - you have not mucked up or anything.
What version of firmware is your expression running now? It will show up on the cricut machine when you turn it on - if it is 2.3 or 2.32 you have no worries.

I signed because I have a Mac and can't use DSS. SCAL was my only option if I wanted to do really wonderful things on my own, not limited to the Carts idea of what I wanted.

Thanks

I'm a little confused, so maybe somebody here can answer my question. I have an E and SCAL. I updated my firmware and my SCAL works and my E cuts. Why would I go and download something that is going to block my SCAL from working? I think I understand that when PC makes new cartridges to sell, they update their firmware so these carts can be used with DS and at that time they install a block so that SCAL won't work. Unless I was using DS and buying new carts, I don't see a problem for me. Am I correct? TIA

Thanks for your quick reply. We checked and the current firmware version is 2.32. This is what it brought it to once DesignStudio was first installed.
Yesterday I ran into the InkScape video that was on YouTube... Awesome!
Looks like Corel Draw would seperate colors but why make things more difficult than they need to be? InkScape is the next download.

You are exactly right. I really don't know if Provo purposely blocks SCAL, or if it's really that SCAL simply doesn't know how to interpret the changes to the firmware. Perhaps some of both. If your E and SCAL are working together nicely, and you don't use new carts when they are are released with a new firmware, there is no reason whatsoever to do anything to your firmware. SCAL would need to learn now to read the new firmware version when it comes out for new Cricut and SCAL users, and SCAL users who use the new carts. But that is down the road, not today.
