I'm not good with closing paths either, but if I were approaching this I might overlay very thin rectangles (see red bars in the photo) on top of the whole path and then do a "subtract" action, several times? It looks like you could cleanly split it into six parts...
Mitsim - it's not a matter of saving "a few pennies"; it would simply be nice to use a steeper angled blade and cut tougher material -- thus my trying the regular 60-degree Rolands.

The Roland-compatible blades that can be easily obtained all over the place online fit in the eClips holder, but are 1mm longer (24 vs. 23 mm) and the recessed part of the blade is a bit thinner in diameter.
