What are you doing when things disappear? Is this in Inkscape or SCAL? If you are in Inkscape are you trying to Path/Union? If you are in SCAL did you convert everything to Path?

When you trace this image, change the brightness cutoff to 0.30. The tracing routine is reading the brightness/darkness values of your image and it is placing the red nose in with the black. The defaults are great for true black and white, but need to be adjusted for most other things.

Thanks so much!!! Is there anything that can be done about the collar being open on one side and not going all the way across on the left when I open it in scal? Or is that because it is not a good quality image?

You want separation between the head and body? There are many different ways to do this. I think I would use the Beizer tool to make a short line where you want the break, convert Stroke to path, select cat and line, then Path/division. Deselect, then click on the new little piece and delete it. Lots of other way too. It's easier to connect things than break them apart.
