Inkscape isn't working

Hi, I am having an issue with inkscape, every time I try to use my circle or square, I just get a bunch of square dots. This is driving me crazy. I want to do circle text.

The fill and stroke are probably turned off. To set the fill, select the tool you want to use, then click on one of the colors at the bottom of the Inkscape window. This will only work for your new shapes. If you want to see what you already have, try Control A and then click on one of the color swatches at the bottom of the window. HTH
