Is "Easy Cut Studio" a pirated and repackaged "Sure Cuts A Lot"?

Post by vr_driver »

Hello.
I've just been given a cutter, so I'm very new at this stuff. However, I'm very computer savvy. I was looking for some software to get this Highlight Electronics HL-721 cutter working, and I came across a program called "Easy Cut Studio" 5. It was simple, easy to use and so i considered buying it.
As a cautious internet user, I couldn't find any contact information, specifically a country location, or phone number, address, business registration etc.
After doing a Whois lookup, it's by Goddady, to a Chinese location.
So, I started opening up their documentation... strangely enough, it mentioned a company called "Craft Edge Inc". So, I researched that name, and came here...

I'm guessing this domain (craftedge.com) is where the software is actually coming from and it's just been repackaged and sold for the same price, same features, all with a different name and a few minor changes.

Can people of this forum please confirm my suspicions please.

Thanks,
Steve

Easy Cut Studio is legitimate. As with other software products, sometimes a company will want to buy and sell a product with their own name brand on it. Personally, I would stick with SCAL's version since it's the original version by the developer and I would trust it to have the latest updates which often come out as frequently as once a week depending on what bugs might have been reported.

Also, the resources available for SCAL are abundant. For example, here's my own support page for SCAL which you might find useful. :)

There are also a number of different SCAL support groups on Facebook in case you have a FB account.

Post back if you have any other questions!

Ah, Thanks Sandy. That makes perfect sense now. While white-labelling of websites is common enough, this one had me questioning a little. Thanks for clarifying. I think yes, I'll go down the SCAL route, purely for that reason you mentioned.

This world is all new for me, but I just ordered some clear packer tape (or whatever the correct term is) and some vinyl on ebay, so it'll be a software thing for me next.

Keen to learn, so thanks for the link and tips.

Here is my machine I fixed up. The cross bar on the frame was missing. The fun part was trying to get the thing working on the mac, which wasn't too hard, I just need the right software and virtual driver. So far, so good!

Good for you getting it all set up! If you have any SCAL questions at all, feel free to post them. Here's a link to my own support page in case you want access to a very detailed user manual on SCAL functions:

BTW, when I first heard about Easy Cut Studio, I immediately contacted the developer of SCAL about it and that's when I found out that it was legit rebranding.
