importing images into scal 3

can you help having created a design scanned it into my garden ( canon ) & copied it into scal 3 ... the images which are simple tree trunks to be used for appliqué ..in scal they are now incomplete. So I was wondering if there is a specific way in which to trace and then import into scal. Thank you
