Design Help Needed

Hi there! I am looking for some design help. I have had SCAL for a couple of years now and haven't even scratched the surface when it comes to playing around. I basically import and trace shapes and hope that I don't have to do much more simply because I don't have the knowledge to manipulate the images let alone do something like drawing! However, I am attempting to make a fairly sizable quantity of baby announcements for a friend (and fairly quickly) and found a jpeg that is absolutely perfect----except for the fact that it needs a bit of design work so that it can be cut. I removed a lot of the extra layers to get to the point you see attached. I have Inkscape but don't know how to use it! Terrible, I know! Basically, I am hoping someone will be able to connect the lines on the balloon image and the banner so they can be cut separately and remove the junk....and I am hoping it is easy???? (The original image had another balloon in front of it which is why it has the extra junk on the right side.) Anyone's assistance is appreciated!

Hi Susan,
I was able to remove more of the lines in SCAL but I am still trying to figure out how to erase some and connect others. Do you have any advice on where I can find a good tutorial?
Thank YOU!

This might help....under the path menu is split path, close path etc.

This video from scappy dew shows how to use some of them.
