pdf vs jpg/bmp

Hi all
I have always imported my images into Inkscape as a jpg format. But I had tried the pdf format the other day for something and it worked for me.
So I was wondering from those who have used both what is everyone's preference? Do you get a better image to trace using one of these over the other? Does one type work better on importing?
As I say I have always used jpg and had no problems but just wanted some ideas on pdf's.
Thanks
Raewyn

It all depends on the individual file. A JPG file is a low resolution file meant to be viewed on screen. A PDF file could be any type of file saved as a PDF. I can create a file in Illustrator and save it as a PDF and you could open it and not have to trace any of it because it will already be vector artwork. I could also take a JPG image and place it into an Illlustrator file and save it as a PDF and when you open it, it will be the same as if you had the JPG file itself. BMP files are raster or Pixel based files. Again, it depends on the size whether or not it would make a good artwork. The smaller the size the lower quality of the image.

Well-put and concise answer to an excellent question!

I'll just add to the other excellent post that I look at the pdf first. Set inkscape to outline view and you can tell if the image you want is already in vector form.
