Image cutting in different position from screen

I recently installed Scal on a new laptop running Windows 7. Everything is fine except that images are not cutting in the same position as shown on the screen. This is OK if I'm cutting on 12x12 paper but not if I'm cutting on smaller paper. Any solutions gratefully received.

Double check your mat orientation... It's under the Document tab in the Properties box. The arrow in the center of the the edge of the virtual mat will show you how it will feed in the machine. I keep mine vertical with the arrow at the top of the mat... makes it easier for me to get things lined up for cutting.

I am presently trying out the trial version of SCAL to see if I want to buy it. I am having the same issue. I looked for what was posted here; but my properties box does not show any document section??
Never mind I just found it. Gee,if I ever get this all figured out.....Another quick question, when you want to cut out several different parts for a pieced item is it best to make a different page for each part or to just use different colored paper on your mat corresponding to the color you want for the particular piece. Thanks all.

I am kinda new at this too, but I so far think it is easier to put all the parts on one page and then arrange the paper accordingly on the mat.

Yes, utilize the layers function. Layers can be turned on and off by using the "eye" icon next to it in the Layers box. I use new pages for a differing project...Say a card and bag that go together, card on page 1 and bag on page 2. It is all up to personal preference though.

Thank you! I think I have finally figured it out enough to go ahead and buy the SCAL software now.

I'm new at this as well. Here's what I'm seeing:
I have a Cricut Personal Electronic Cutter with a physical mat of 6" length and a 12" width with the insertion arrow at the top of the 6" width.
The virtual mat is vertical 12 x 6 with arrow on top. The virtual mat rulers are at 12" on the bottom of BOTH sides of the virtual mat.
But, my physical mat ruler on the left side starts with zero (0") on the bottom but on the right the ruler starts with twelve (12") on the bottom (like the virtual mat).
If you are not careful you may find yourself aligning to the left side ruler which DOES NOT correlate with the virtual mat!
I've had to train myself to ignore the left vertical ruler on my physical mat!
