Making bigger designs fit 6x12 mat

I know there has to be an easy way to do this. I have an original Cricut so can only use a 6x12 mat. I just downloaded SCAL 2 yesterday and really am clueless. I have some designs (.svg files) that are larger than that (for example 14.4x14.2). I need to break the parts up and make separate "pages" so that I can make things the right colors (it's a two toned flower and leaves-the entire flower takes 5 different colors)). I think I have the breaking it apart piece down, but really seem to make a mess of resizing in the beginning when I start off with a 6x12 mat. Can I start off opening the project on a 12x12 mat in SCAL, break it apart by color, resave the new pages and then reopen them on a 6x12 mat to cut? Does that even make sense? I just worked all night so maybe not:) I'm really excited about this. My grand daughters are coming over tomorrow night so I would like to have some flowers for them to make.
Thanks in advance:)
