If you can use PSP ( or any other graphics program ) you can do ' fake welding' save as jpeg then just trace in Inkscape and save as .svg
Use solid black shapes letters etc. Type them one at a time so they are on different layers then use the select tool to push them together.
Save as jpeg, open in Inkscape Path>trace bitmap, use brightness threshold 0.650, delete your original, save as .svg and you're away.
This lets you use the program you're most comfortable with for designing, plus you can take advantage of all the fantastic ready made shapes PSP has to offer.

last three slides
( the Inkscape interface looks different because I'm temporarily using the unstable version of 0.46 which incidentally has no help files, pdf import makes the program seize up, pattern on path doesn't work and it keeps crashing for no reason!!)
