usually the differences are very slight - I've not used the new update yet: last time I looked it was still a beta testing version, so will go see what's new.
I've been using it since January 2006 and when we started it was just an icon which sat on the desktop - you didn't need to install at all! Then after specific requests from the son of one of the ladies from papertrheads they added the save as .dxf file function so we could use it wth the Craft ROBO and Inkscapemania began!
kkrewtea really you don't need to know how the program functions to make your templates. If you follow the tutorials you'll see that the same commands are used over and over again - then you can start experimenting. Inkscape is a full blown graphics program - every bit as good as much more expensive programs and it's still free.
