OK, now another stupid question.... When I go to delete nodes, the entire image is deleted. How do you isolate what you want to delete without losing the whole thing?

Jancy, thank you! For your step-by-step instructions I welded my name and then made a shadow for it.

For some reason CTRL + ) doesn't work for me - but ALT + ) does!

I know all keyboards are different so I'm guessing this is why CTRL doesn't work for me.

I could really use some help... I am making my first word book, the Baby one on here, however I can't seem to make a mat for the letters. I follow the directions above but when I cut it it doesn't do it the way it shows...

Sort by Inkscape and you will find a bunch of video tutorials. The one on mats is called "Funkified" text. The one on Boolean operations is also very helpful with respect to welding. Funny names, excellent tutorials.
