Yes a universal adapter would be fine..

Just to update : )
Received my universal adapter from ebay and it works fine, I got the one that you can adjust the voltage on as it came with a variety of 'ends' to plug into the cricut but as it happened, the one that was fixed onto the cable fitted perfectly. I am so pleased that I have my baby back... lol
I wanted to let you guys know in case anyone else has a cable problem
