I didn't explain it in my blog...but I went back to see how I did it and basically I just pulled the base radius up toward the top of the star.
As you can see from the sample I eliminated some nodes to simplify it for cutting.

Did you have to put a star in the center of the first larger star and do exclusion first?

No. Pulling the node up created the second star and then I just needed to do object to path so I could edit nodes and eliminate areas I didn't want in the final version.

you guys are so technical. i know trying would help eliminate my confusion, and maybe also reading tuts more but ya'll are amazing. My mind is simplified. :?
