thanks for the help. If I group the objects the way I want, select them and then use path>union (or one of the other operations depending on desired results) then save, the cut lines come out fine on scal. All thats left is to cut and see if it all fits together.

I can get the wmf into inkscape, ungroup it and move the objects around as wanted. My problem is after I save it as a svg and try to import it into scal1 an empty box shows up. I have tried to use path > object to path and I am able to view the nodes on all objects and then save but it still doesn't...
