I turn the page setup to landscape and group all the pieces together in color groups. Like all the black, white, pink, brown and such. I space it all out of the page and save it that way, so when I import it to SCAL I just put all the colors on one mat and click cut.
I hope that makes sense.
I have tried to save each layer in a different .svg file, but no matter what I try, when I import them into SCAL they all end up different sizes.

Thanks Adina
I think this is probably what I will have to do also. I have gone thru so many tutorials trying to find out how to do this that now I am just totally frustated. Most of the tutorials are for robomaster and pazzels etc. I use a the baby bug and I just can't seem to find tutorials for it. Paperthreads has a few good ones but most are pretty old, dating back to 2006. I really don't want to design my own artwork, I just want to be able to cut some images to use with my pages that I can't find anywhere else and clipart jpg's seem to have a ton of them. Well thanks again for your help.

Once you break apart, you have a mess on your hands...just kidding. I change my shapes to different colors so I can see what I am working with. When you break apart, everything goes black. I click on a the shape, change the color so I can have an idea what shape I am working with. I could move it but I want to work with everything where is supposed to be until I know that I have everything colored cuz some objects have to be combined to make holes.
My two cents worth.

Do you add the color in inkscape? How do you do that?

How did you change colors? I find that I lose track of what color some of the little pieces are supposed to be. Often, they're not recognizable once broken apart. It would be handy to color them in inkscape so that you know what color you want them to be when you cut them out.

At the bottom of the page is a row of color. Select the piece you want to color (make sure you see the arrows), and click on any of the colors (this works best after you have used break apart because the shape is in pieces).

I've been playing a lot with this both saving my work as a whole and individual pieces. You can't choose which pieces cut so how do you do it in SCA without wasting a ton of paper? To try to manage the problem I saved each individual piece as an svg file, reconstructed the pieces on the mat to fit each other (very, very difficult without zoom), saved the file as .scut, then went through and deleted the pieces that I didn't want to cut. I did this for each color group - always keeping the original .scut with all the pieces. Please tell me there is an easier way. Once we have multiple mat options this will be much easier.
Please, please if there is a different way let me know.
Thanks!

what a great question!! I'd love to know opinions on this as well.
I hope a color line selection is in the works so that it will be possible to select which part of a piecing you want to cut or not cut.

Here is a screen shot of what I do.
Hope this helps.
The top picture is the .svg file open in inkscape.
The bottem picture is the .svg file open in SCAL.
When I cut it, I just line up all 3 colors of paper on the mat at once and cut away!
