Selecting via the layer tab

Hi. I like to click on a layer to select the objects in that layer. However, if I then try to use the keyboard to move the object, it doesn't move, I have to click on the already selected object to be able to use the keyboard. It's as though the object is selected, but the "focus" is not assigned to that selection.
