Set up location to store fonts
I need some EASY directions for storing downloaded fonts. I have unzipped them and placed them in a folder on my desktop. When I drag and drop them into my The Font Thing program it also stores them in my computer fonts folder. My computer is now running slow and I want to just have the original fonts in my computer folder and be able to access my downloaded fonts and dingbats when needed. What am I doing wrong? Thanks to anyone that can help me. Deedee

I don't know anything about the font thing, but I use AMP and it seems to do the job for me. I also have a separate font file on my desktop. When using AMP, you can temporarily install a font and then use it in SCAL or any other application (I think) as long as you keep AMP open. When you close it, the font WILL NOT be installed. It's my understanding that there are certain fonts that you HAVE TO HAVE for Windows to work properly. It you can remember which fonts you installed, I would just delete them, then use a font viewer program that installs the fonts temporarily.
I was going hog wild installing fonts a while back and I need to go in and clean out my permanent font folder too! Good luck and I hope this helps.

Store them anywhere but your desktop. I was told by an IT guy that the more stuff on your desktop, the slower your computer will run. Create a new folder in the My Documents folder and store all of your large files there instead.

Thank you both for your response. I appreciate the information. I am still somewhat confused. I don't want to put them into the Sure Cuts a Lot program then?

With AMP, you don't have to drag and drop anything. It will show you your installed fonts and then you click a tab to see your uninstalled fonts. You will have to click on a font file to open it then decide if you want to install it temporarily or permanently. You'd have to see it to know what I'm talking about. Trust me, If I can do it, so can you. Again, maybe The Font Thing is similar, but I'm not familiar with it.
I think SCAL will load any TTF as long as it's opened, whether it be permanent or temporary. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. I have on occasion not been able to find a particular font that I know is open because of the way it's alphabetized or sometimes the name of the font is slightly different from the zip file I downloaded. If you open a font in between cuts using SCAL, hit the reload button on the library window.
mbaird - thanks for the info about putting too much in your desktop. I didn't know that. Maybe that's why my computer is so pokey. I'm always running disk cleaners and defrags hoping to speed things up a little. Time to clean off my desk! Hope it helps.

Re: Set up location to store fonts
I think I can help you. I use the Font Thing and it took me a while to fully figure it out
When I download a font, I unzip it and save it in a folder in My Documents called Fonts.
When I open the font thing, I use the browse tab in the upper left side of the screen.
When you highlight documents and settings, the font thing will see all you fonts stored in the folder but they ARE NOT yet installed in windows. This is better for you hard drive.
If you want to use a particular font in a windows program, just click the install icon at the top of the page. It will install the font immediately. I have found that I have to close and reopen SCAL so the font will be visible in the program.
After using the font, you should uninstall it using the font thing with the uninstall icon.
HTH!

Re: Set up location to store fonts
When I downloaded The Font Thing, I put it right on my C: drive and whenever I download a new font, I install it directly in the same Font Thing folder. Then when I open TFT, all of those fonts show up. I've never had to drag or drop them anywhere - theyr'e already there.
When I want to use a specific font, I open both TFT and SCAL, choose the font I want in TFT by clicking on it, and then (ok, it's been about 2 months since I've used SCAL because we moved, so bear with me - I can't remember exactly how I did this) click on "update" or something like that under "Fonts" in SCAL and that one font that I had highlighted in TFT would show up in SCAL. Does that make any sense?

Re: Set up location to store fonts
I think my problem is I am not removing the fonts after I use them. So I have 900+ stored on the SCAL program. I didn't realize SCAL would recognize the font if it was open in The Font Thing.
Thanks everyone for all your helpful suggestions. Still have so much to learn.
