Help with PNG/JPEG files

So I wanted a kiddie mermaid SVG and couldn't find any. So I downloaded a set of files that included mermaids, fish, etc. They all came in PNG and JPG. I figured I could do a print and cut with the mermaid. However, I'm having nothing but problems. When I try to place the image with the JPG it comes in huge. I can resize it but it doesn't look anything like the original file. The shape is the same but the colors are all weird. When I try to place the image using the PNG file it also comes in huge. I can resize and the colors are correct. Unfortunately, the image is wrong... it looks like there are multiple copies layered on top of each other. So the mermaid has about 3 heads and 6 arms.
Any ideas?? Is there a way to use Inkscape to fix this? If so are there basic directions because I have NO idea how to use Inkscape.
Was hoping to make my niece a birthday card

Every image I tried placing looked correct, both in 2.041 and 2.043. Have you tried viewing the images in another program? Is it possible that there is something wrong with the images? If the images seem to be OK, I would contact CE for help.
