Path - Difference not working, please help

I'm so frustrated. I'm sure it is something simple. I've looked at numerous youtube video's, but it's not working.
I have an image with several drawings on it that I want to delete. Pumpkins, leaves, etc. I want to keep the pumpkin.
I import the image. I trace bitmap. I have the two images on the screen, I delete the original one.
I click on the image, click rectangle button, draw my rectangle, click the arrow button (select image button), go to path-difference, and nothing happens. My rectangle is still there, the original pic is still there.
Did this make any sense? lol
