Some how there should me away to make your own cut mat and then make it 24 x infant. Would the Cricut care if you command it to cut outside the 24 x 24 boundary?

I don't think you could. Once it reaches the 24", it wants you to unload the mat. Even if you were to press load again, it would take you to the top of your current mat not start a new section.
Craftwell will be coming out with their cutter, the Ecraft, sometime this summer. It cuts 12" by whatever and even has a roller for loading stuff like vinyl.

The Cricut opening is only 13 inches wide so you can't do 24 x infinte. It is possible to do 12 x infinite if Todd wants to program it that way. I know the 24 inch length isn't hard coded because MTC can do this.

What type of mat do you use for a project longer than 24 inches?

I haven't done this, but I think people tape 2 together. Also with vinyl I believe it may be possible to cut without a mat.

Thanks Kay, I didn't know the 24" could be overridden.
As to what you might use, I suppose your could tape together several 24" mats, if you had the space. Or maybe pause it and reload everything for the next cut. How does MTC do it?

MTC really isn't set up to do this, I think it's a bug but someone was able to take advantage of it by using 2 or 3 24 inch mats and pausing the cut, moving the mat from the back to the front, retaping it on and so on. I know SCAL seems to be all over the mat when it cuts and to do a roll feed type of operation you'd want as little travel as possible in the x direction (you wouldn't want to cut your last letter on a banner and go back to the first one, for instance).

Ok I was brain cramped when I stated 24 x infant. Can someone quick clue me into what is MTC? I was thinking for a mat I could use poster board with tack spray.
