This blocking problem is very confusing to me. Mine worked for awhile after I updated, then quit. BUT I reinstalled SCAL2 after DS told me to uninstall. Now both programs work fine.

I had the same problem (downloaded latest version of DS trial, no new carts on it), so looked around the Cricut discussion board. A couple of folks said you have to uninstall the version you have then reinstall the latest version for the new carts to show up. When I did this, I was able to see the new carts.
As for the cartridges, I have no use for them as I don't make cards or scrapbook, but I would never say they were a waste of money (I keep up-to-date on DS just to see if they come out with a cart I can't live without). If you like the designs and can use them, they are worth it to you.

I'm getting the new seasonal cart "when it's cold outside" and it wasn't showing up on my DS, so I went and ran the newest update, went to use my DS this morning and it's asking me to update the firmware....ugh....so i come here hoping it'll not affect SCAL....I've not got the newest SCAL 2.0 yet.....my cricut expressions says 2.32 when i turn it on....I'm afraid this is a trick and a trap to block SCAL, which I love, I'm so torn.....what should I do?????

Update. 2.34 is the latest firmware version and SCAL works fine with it.

Thank you much jasenj....I ran it and it made me download the firmware twice, but finally worked and so I cut what I was needing on DS and then I went into my SCAL and cut what I needed and it worked fine...I'm so happy....so all is well that ends well.....now i need to upgrade to the 2.0 version...lol...thanks again everyone for all the input.
