Go to the My Crafty Life, dan99.blogspot.com has an excellent tutorial for using inkscape. You don't want to use layers. You really need them all on one layer. He is so easy going and understandable. I first listen and watch tutorial, then listen again and write it down. Also if your monitor is big enough you can do a split screen and follow him. His tutorials are usually about ten minutes.
