I don't know how you're supposed to do this, but here's how I do it:
Make a copy of the first scalloped circle, and paste it onto the mat.
Make the copy a shadow, and then change the sizing of the shadow from 1.00 to .10. You won't be able to use the down arrow to do this-- you have to type in the numbers.
Zoom in and place the copy around the original circle.
Hightlight both items together, and click path, exclude.
Then center these two items on the mat, and place a large rectangle over half of the two circles. Click path, back minus front.
Because you used the path, exclude to take the smaller circle out of the larger one, SCAL recognizes the tiny space between the two items as the 'thing'. Then when you cut it in half with the back minus front, all you get is the tiny sliver of space between the two half-circles to cut. Not exactly what you wanted, but if you get the copy very close, it does the trick.
Attaching the file result so you can see what I did.

Found this post while trying to do the same thing - NOT cut the straight line of the 1/2 scallop circle. How was this finally accomplished? Does anyone know where this Big Shot swing Card SVG file can be found? i'm willing to pay... I cannot figure out how to NOT cut that straight line!
Thanks!

What program are you using to try to do this? I believe inkscape directions are on page 1 of this topic thread, and for scal3 you would
click on the nodes on the sides of the straight line and use Path, Split Path...then you can pull the line away.
Instructions about the scalloped circles is up a couple posts by ptpulley.
