I am guessing something has changed because when I open SCUT files nothing appears on the virtual mat. What am I missing?
Thanks for your help!
opening SCUT files
Re: opening SCUT files
Nothing at all has changed that would cause files to suddenly not appear. If you do a Ctrl+A do you see something selected? Maybe the Fill is turned off or the Opacity or the Workspace Alpha? Maybe try adding a colored shape from the Library... does that show up?

Yes to the library file. When I try to change the color it shuts down the program. I can't figure out any way to open it.
Re: opening SCUT files
This is rather bizarre.
You have two choices:
(1) You can try submitting a support ticket first to see what the developer recommends. Perhaps he has seen this before:

(2) Reinstall.... Updating to the latest version of whatever SCAL you own. You might want to uninstall first through your computer just to make sure that any weird registry issues are cleaned out. But first make sure you have your registration number backed up somewhere.
If you own SCAL5, then you can download the latest without needing your registration until you need to re-activate it.

If you own SCAL4, then you'll need to use this link to obtain the latest.

I also always recommend accepting defaults while installing. Too often, customers will try to install on a different drive or create some new random folder for installing and that seems to cause issues with some programs (not necessarily SCAL).
