Inkscape convert image to vector and place on circle path

Post by louietw »

I'm trying to wrap this paw print/bone around a circle. I'm going to put them on a clay pot bottom and can't figure out how to get this done. I have watched video after video and still don't get it. Can someone help me and please write out how you did it. Thanks in advance. teresa

I want the pattern of paws space bone around the outside of the circle. I can place them there by hand, but I saw a video where the put them around there with the object to path and they were evenly spaced. I want to put them on the lip of the clay dish so I can put under a clay flower pot. On the pot I'm making them go around the rim. I also would like to do this for the wedding glass stems and put their names on them or a design. I was just looking to see how you do it, I tried to do it on my own watching it on the video, but it didn't work for me. This is what I want, only I don't want the center

Your paws and bones are images not paths, you cannot use images in that way in inkscape.
Software: Windows 7 (64 bit) - SCAL 3 - Inkscape - Illustrator CS4 - Signcut Pro

In inkscape (you cannot do this in SCAL) first you need to convert the paws/ bones to vectors..

Zoom in on the first paw so it fills the screen.
Select the Paint bucket tool and on the toolbar change settings to Visible Colours threshhold 11
Now click in each part of the pawprint to fill it.
Select the pawprint IMAGE and delete it.
Select all the vector parts of the paw print and use Path->Combine.

Repeat the process for the bone although as that is one part path->Combine is not needed.

Now select the paw and the bone and path->Combine again to make them one path.

Press HOME key to bring them to the top of the stack.

Now hold shift and also select the circle.

Now use Extentions->Generate From Path -> Scatter.

Tick the live preview box and adjust the spacing to get the correct finish you require.

Click apply.

Done

Attached is one done this way. Note that the more copies you have around the circle the less distortion you will get on the objects.

the above was using Inkscape 0.47 - I assume it will work with other versions

Scatter is better for this application as it does not cause as much distortion to the objects wrapped around the circle as pattern along a path ;)

That's great, I am glad it helped :)

It is quite a useful technique so might be worth memorising or storing away for future reference ;)
